The call for participation for the 2025 EUA-CDE Thematic Peer Group on “Doctoral schools: building bridges beyond academia” is now open.
Thematic Peer Groups (TPGs) organised by the EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) provide participating member universities with opportunities for mutual learning on selected topics. They contribute to a common knowledge base on doctoral education structures, policies and practices in Europe.
In recent years, collaborations between universities and non-academic sectors has gained significant importance, for example with governments, business, social and cultural actors, non-profit organisations, etc. Several studies have investigated this topic, exploring why strategic collaboration between the academic and non-academic world provides numerous benefits. Despite the significant role that these partnerships play in doctoral education, academic bodies and non-academic organisations often have different missions that can influence their interactions. In addition, collaborative approaches between doctoral schools and non-academic partners often take various forms across European countries.
To better understand the complexity and diversity of these collaborations, the 2025 EUA-CDE Thematic Peer Group will take a closer look at doctoral schools’ interaction with partners beyond academia.
The aim of this activity will be to reflect on the nature of the challenges inherent in partnering with non-academic sectors for doctoral schools and the strategies to mitigate these obstacles. This TPG will also take stock of the many forms of interaction with non-academic sectors, suggesting ways to optimize these partnerships. Members of this Thematic Peer Group will have the possibility to share experiences, good practices and lessons learnt when it comes to forging partnerships with non-academic organisations.
Please note that participation to EUA-CDE Thematic Peer Groups is reserved to EUA-CDE member universities only.
