As the voice of Europe’s universities, the European University Association (EUA) is the most comprehensive organisation representing the higher education and research sector in Europe. Since its founding in 2001, EUA has supported university communities, enabling them to contribute to science, society and European competitiveness, while influencing debate and shaping public policy for the benefit of its members.
EUA’s Strategic Plan articulates our identity, guiding commitments and priority actions. Moreover, it emphasises the essential role of universities in fostering societal cohesion and development and reaffirms EUA’s responsibility in enabling this — both as a platform for peer exchange and as a strong advocate for Europe’s universities.

We envision universities that are open and engaged in society while retaining their core values. Europe’s universities will be responsible and autonomous, with different institutional profiles, but united in their missions of learning and teaching, research, innovation and culture in service to society.
What are universities without walls?
The European University Association was formed in 2001 as the result of a merger between the Association of European Universities (CRE) and the Confederation of European Union Rectors’ Conferences.
This decision to create EUA, as a single representative body in Europe for universities and their national associations, was adopted during the Constitutive General Assembly in Salamanca, Spain, on 29-30 March 2001. In 2026, the Association celebrates its 25th anniversary.
