What is the state of university finances in Europe, and what does the future hold? Enora Bennetot Pruvot previews EUA’s latest funding research in University World News.

Faced with steady cost pressure and limited prospects for higher public funding, universities are looking to manage risks and generate income – but this is easier said than done.

Following the 2024 EUA Funding Forum at the University of Helsinki, Enora outlines initial findings from the 168 institutions from 34 countries who responded to an EUA survey earlier in 2024. With insights on the post-Covid-19 recovery, income diversification, changing student populations and recruitment strategies, the importance of EU funding sources – including European Universities alliances, these initial results already bring home the importance of staff professionalisation and investment in expert profiles, as well as a focus on leadership development.
