Erasmus Mundus Joint Master Degree "Decentralised Smart Energy Systems" - DENSYS

Decentralised smart energy systems play an increasing role in the perspective of renewable energy sources integration. The overall goals of the master are:

• to educate with Multiphysics approaches (electrical, mechanical, chemical engineering) top skilled engineers, who will be able to design, size, optimise and operate decentralised smart energy systems while keeping a holistic vision to understand citizens’ needs and to dialog with different stakeholders,
• to train future scientists, since decentralised energy systems still require R&D: smart operation, lifespan optimisation of the hardware components and conversion processes between energy carriers.

The program is jointly built by four EUA members: the University of Lorraine - UL in Nancy (France), the Royal Institute of Technology -KHT in Stockholm (Sweden), the Polytechnic University of Catalonia – UPC in Barcelona (Spain) and the Polytechnic Institute of Torino - PoliTo (Italy).

Two joint summer schools will be organised for networking and to expand students’ transferable skills like business and entrepreneurship, or more technical skills like energy storage, hydrogen or energy systems modelling. In addition, an immersive week in University of Liège (Belgium) will provide sound knowledge in the use of artificial intelligence to manage energy networks. To expand students’ vision, a large range of breadth courses will be proposed, including social sciences and humanities dealing with energy policymaking, geography, social acceptance, risk perception, finance, business, together with an integrated cultural and language experience.

A significant part of the pedagogy will rely on case and challenge-based modules (large multidisciplinary and multi-objective projects), taken from real life and involving partners from the industry and civil society (policy makers, local stakeholders, associations…).

A double master’s degree will be awarded, from UL and the university where the third semester will be completed.

The master addresses two key actions of the EU SET-Plan:

• EU leader of the next generation of renewable energies
• the active role of the consumer/producer in the systems Furthermore, the master is in line with the recommendations provided by EUA-EPUE in the document “Energy Transition Action Agenda for European Universities”.

Opening is scheduled in early September 2020, while the application deadline for future students is 17 January 2020.
