How can we move towards balanced academic careers, which take into account the variety of university missions?
During this webinar, EUA experts offered insights from data collected from ongoing and planned reform initiatives, and discussed recognition measures through careers and what universities offer to support professional development, especially in learning and teaching.
EUA’s vision for 2030 Universities without walls identified the reform of academic careers as a priority for action within the European Higher Education Area. This includes the notable ambition of using a broader set of evaluation practices for academic careers and promoting further parity of esteem between different career paths and aspects of academic life, for instance between research and teaching.
Over the past year, EUA has launched two activities aiming to gather data and examples of practice in this area. As a co-chair of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment (CoARA) Working Group on Reforming Academic Career Assessment and as the coordinator of an Erasmus+ project ‘Staff development for learning and teaching at European universities’ (STAFF-DEV). As such, two surveys conducted in 2024, respectively on academic career assessment reform initiatives and staff development offered to enhance learning and teaching, have gathered data from higher education institutions as well as research organisations. In addition, EUA has established its own Task and Finish Group on Academic Careers, which will guide the Association’s future work in this area.
