How can universities build on the strengths of European higher education and research to ensure that our continent builds prosperity, sustainability and democracy in the decade ahead? This question will be at the heart of the 2027 EUA Annual Conference, hosted by the Slovenian Rectors’ Conference at the University of Ljubljana.Europe’s ability to shape its own future will be determined by its response to today’s profound geopolitical, technological, economic and demographic change. Universities are central to this endeavour. Over decades, if not centuries, they have crafted a uniquely European system based on shared higher education and research spaces, cross-border cooperation and mobility, academic freedom, institutional autonomy and a strong commitment to serving society.These foundations have generated knowledge, talent and innovation across the continent, advancing societies and strengthening Europe's capacity to act collectively. However, in order to drive transformation, universities also need to embrace it themselves. Indeed, their ability to overcome fundamental challenges and adapt to change will be key to sustaining their own, and Europe’s, resilience and dynamism.Through the lenses of education, research and innovation, organisational and financial structures and international engagement, participants will explore how universities can help shape Europe's future at a time when the principles and structures underpinning its societal and economic model are increasingly being questioned.
The Annual Conference is EUA’s flagship event for European university leaders. Each year, the Annual Conference is hosted by one of our member universities and provides an unrivalled opportunity to join discussions on prominent topics in higher education, shape EUA’s policy work at European level and network with high-level colleagues from across Europe. In addition, the Annual Conference is combined with EUA’s yearly General Assembly, where the Association’s members are involved in key management and strategy decisions.
