2023 EUA-CDE Annual Meeting

14 - 16 Jun 2023 On-Site
Lappeenranta-lahti University Of Technology And University Of Helsinki

Photos taken during the event are now available!

The 2023 EUA-CDE Annual Meeting will focus on the different dimensions of communication in doctoral education and developing comprehensive approaches to including communication in doctoral education strategy and practices.

Through workshops and sessions in various formats, participants can explore the topic of communication as an integral part of the doctoral candidate’s journey. At the same time, they will discuss communication skills as valuable assets for several career paths, inside and outside of academia, as well as how doctoral candidates can better communicate their competencies to the broader public.

The Annual Meeting will also provide a platform to reflect on the critical role that communication plays in the daily activities of doctoral schools and programmes, both internally and in their interactions with external partners. Other topics will include the different dimensions of scholarly publishing, intercultural communication and the role of social media in today’s doctoral education.

EUA-CDE Annual Meetings have become the largest and most comprehensive gatherings of academic leaders, senior academics, doctoral education professionals, postdoctoral researchers, doctoral candidates and other stakeholders working on doctoral education and research training. They are open to anyone with responsibilities and interest in this field.

Welcome

Jari Hämäläinen

On behalf of the Lappeenranta–Lahti University of Technology LUT, I am glad to welcome you to the EUA-CDE Annual Meeting 2023 organised on our campus in Lahti, Finland.

LUT is a pioneering research university in Finland, bringing together technology and business since 1969. Our international community of almost 100 nationalities is composed of 7,500 students and experts engaged in scientific research and academic education. Our international English-language master’s programmes are one of our strengths. According to Education Statistics Finland, the employment rate of our graduates is the second highest in Finland. LUT is one of the signatories of the Coalition for Advancing Research Assessment and has received the HR Excellence in Research award.

The LUT Trailblazer 2030 strategy “Science with a Purpose” focuses on the following research areas: Energy – Transition to a carbon-neutral world; Air – Turning emissions into opportunities; Water – Refining sidestreams into value; and Business – Sustainable renewal of business and industry. We are among the world’s best universities in business and economics (top 150) and physical sciences (top 250), and one of the top 350 universities overall in the THE World University Rankings 2023. We are implementing the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in education, research and campus activities. We are ninth in the world in climate action (SDG13) and in the top 200 in the THE Impact Rankings. Our Green Campus has been chosen as the world’s most ecological campus.

The EUA-CDE Annual Meeting focuses on the different dimensions of communication in doctoral education. What would be a better way to develop communication than joining the annual meeting and meeting with your peers! I am looking forward to seeing you in Lahti this summer.

Professor Jari Hämäläinen

Vice President for Research and Innovation

Jouni HirvonenTogether with our colleagues in Lappeenranta-Lahti University of Technology, the University of Helsinki is glad and honoured to invite all the interested participants to the EUA-CDE Annual Meeting 2023 organised in the joint University Campus in Lahti, Finland.

The University of Helsinki (UH) is the largest and oldest (established in 1640) University and Academic Institution in Finland. We have a student population of over 30 000 BA, MA and doctoral students and a staff of about 8,000 persons including almost 4,000 researchers and teachers. The number of academic doctors graduating annually from the UH is 450. On January 1st, 2023, we launched a new joint Doctoral School of the University of Helsinki, replacing the previous four campus-based graduate schools. The new Doctoral School includes 33 Doctoral Programmes covering all the disciplines of the UH. The goal of the new Doctoral School is to provide more unified opportunities and pedagogic solutions for the doctoral candidates working and studying in various disciplines of the 11 Faculties of the UH. While we emphasize the importance of inter-disciplinary research, the subject-specific core competences, differences in scientific profiles and in-depth understanding of the field will still remain as key outcomes of our doctoral education in the future. Another major goal of the new Doctoral School is to cooperate with national and international colleagues even more actively than before and to participate in international networks of doctoral educators in EUA, LERU and UNA-Europa / UNA-Futura.

The EUA-CDE meeting in Lahti in June 2023 provides excellent opportunities for joint discussions, development measures and future perspectives in doctoral education on a European level. In Helsinki we have identified three important topic areas for a successful doctoral education of the future: 1. Communication as an integral part of the processes of doctoral education. Being able to identify and promote successful practices of student-supervisor interaction will have a strong impact on career development prospects of doctoral candidates. 2. Being able to verbalize and utilize the development of knowledge and skills accumulated during doctoral studies is vitally important for a doctoral candidate, especially when they are looking for a career outside of the academia in societal and industrial/entrepreneurial career paths. 3. Personal and communal well-being of doctoral candidates. One cannot overestimate the role of motivation and well-being as positive factors enhancing satisfaction in student life and success in professional career development. I wish you all welcome to a vibrant and collegial meeting in Lahti this summer!

Vice-Rector for Research, Research Education, and Innovation in the University of Helsinki
