03 June 2021

EUA is pleased to announce that Tia Loukkola has been promoted to Deputy Secretary General. In this new role, Tia will contribute to increasing EUA’s capacity for strategic and organisational development and external representation. She will also deputise for the Secretary General when necessary. She will share the strategic oversight of different aspects of EUA activities including higher education policy development. She will also take a leading role in implementing EUA’s new membership strategy and in leading other organisational development projects.

“I am excited to take up this new role within EUA,” said Loukkola. “While my profile changes, I am glad to be able to further strengthen collaboration with EUA members and partners in cooperation with the colleagues in the Secretariat.”

Tia joined EUA in April 2008 and has most recently served as Director of the Institutional Development unit, which encompasses various activities focusing on providing services and supporting EUA members. In this capacity, Tia Loukkola oversaw a variety of EUA activities dealing with improving and monitoring the quality of universities and their educational mission, as well as specific topics including quality assurance, recognition, rankings and learning and teaching. Her tasks also included representing the views of EUA membership in European policymaking, including in the Bologna Process and in the European Union.

“I am delighted that Tia has taken up the post of Deputy Secretary General,” said Amanda Crowfoot, EUA Secretary General. “She brings a wealth of experience to the role in terms of EUA, the university sector and European higher education policy. I very much look forward to working with her in order to further develop and strengthen the Association in the interests of all of its members.”

Before joining EUA, she worked at the University of Turku in Finland for ten years in various capacities both in faculty and central administration. Most of her work was related to study and the international affairs of the university. Tia holds a Master’s Degree in French language and culture with minors in journalism, Spanish language and culture, and comparative literature from the University of Turku.
