Call for applications: the Philipp Schwartz Initiative for supporting scholars at risk

19 January 2022

In view of the situation in Ukraine, the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany is allowing Ukrainian researchers to be nominated until 18 March 2022 in the current call for applications of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative.

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation has launched the 11th call of applications of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative. German universities, universities of applied sciences and other research institutions can apply for funding until 4 March 2022.

The foundation’s initiative enables universities and research institutions in Germany to host researchers at risk on the basis of a full fellowship. Scholars must be nominated by institutions and cannot apply directly. Accordingly, the host institutions receive funding which is composed of two elements:

  • A fellowship amount which covers a fixed-amount fellowship or contractual employment for a period of up to 24 months
  • An allowance for the host institution of € 20,000 for each individual sponsored, intended for measures to support Philipp Schwartz fellows in integrating and re-starting their careers.

Besides being demonstrably at risk, the candidates for a Philipp Schwartz Fellowship must fulfil several criteria, such as: have a completed doctorate or comparable academic degree, not be or have been resident outside their own country for more than five years at the time of application, have the language skills required to successfully conduct their research projects, have academic qualifications (e.g. publications) and the potential to be integrated in the (broader academic) employment market.

Institutions that would be interested in hosting researchers at risk but do not have anyone specific in mind can approach the Scholars at Risk Network or the Council for At-Risk Academics, which may be able to help them find suitable candidates.
