European Commission consultation - education for environmental sustainability

21 June 2021

EUA encourages its members to contribute to the European Commission’s consultation on education for environmental sustainability. It will remain open until 24 September 2021.

Through the Green Deal, the EU aims at taking action to fight climate change and encourage all citizens to work towards a greener and more sustainable Europe. The European Commission supports cooperation and activities at European level on education for environmental sustainability, including through the Erasmus+ programme and the Skills Agenda, which involves universities directly. This work also supports the UN 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development, particularly Sustainable Development Goal 4 on quality and inclusive education and Target 4.7, which aims at ensuring that all learners acquire the knowledge and skills needed to promote sustainable development and sustainable lifestyles.

This input will be used to prepare a proposal (Council Recommendation) which is scheduled for adoption by the European Commission in autumn 2021. The proposal will then pass to the EU Member States for discussion and adoption by education ministers at the Council of the European Union.
