The future of the ESG: reflections based on findings from the QA-FIT project

The QA-FIT project recently published an analysis on “The Future of the ESG”, which reflects on the views of higher education stakeholders on the future of the Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the EHEA (the ESG).


The paper is based on four surveys (of students, higher education institutions, national higher education authorities, and quality assurance agencies) on the current trends in quality assurance and expectations and needs regarding the European QA framework.

In particular, the paper addresses the stakeholders views on 1) the scope (i.e. coverage) of the ESG in terms of whether and to what extent they should address also other university missions beyond learning and teaching; 2) the structure of the ESG, i.e. whether the distinction between standards and guidelines and the level of detail and guidance provided is appropriate and 3) whether and how to address topics not specifically addressed in the ESG 2015, such as academic values, the social dimension of higher education, and new forms of education provision, e.g. microcredentials or digital learning.

EUA is a partner of the QA-FIT project and co-authored the paper. EUA will be also participating in the revision of the ESG, expected to start in the second half of 2024.
