The Eurasian University Union held its 2018 Higher Education Summit in Istanbul from February 14-16. EUA participated in the event that gathered higher education institution leaders, educational service providers and academics interested in developing cooperation with the Eurasian region.

The leading theme of the event was internationalisation, which was covered in various panel and roundtable sessions through different angles such as marketing and communication, institutional strategies, as well as enabling conditions for universities.

Thomas Estermann, Director for Governance, Funding and Public Policy Development, represented EUA at the event. He spoke about trends in university funding in Europe and their impact on university management. He shared the findings of the latest edition of the EUA Public Funding Observatory which confirms a variety of pressures on university finances across Europe. In the case of Turkey, for example, there is a rapidly-expanding student population that demands critical investment in the sector. Among the most notable trends are increased financial steering via performance indicators and a concentration of resources, increasingly diverse income structures for higher education institutions and the broader question of balance between public and private funding of higher education and research in each country.

In this context, EUA stresses the importance of enhanced leadership and strategic positioning for universities to navigate such complex environments.
