Online conference: Academic Freedom as a Human Right, 14 – 16 December 2020

The School of Human Rights in Turkey, an EU-funded project that started during the state of emergency in Turkey, organises the International Online Conference of Academic Freedom as a Human Right on 14, 15 and 16 December 2020.


During the conference, there will be a discussion on the definition of “academic freedom”, with two key areas of focus:

  1. Definition and historical responsibility of academic freedom, as well as the meanings attributed to academic freedom as a human right in Turkey, and in other parts of the world.
  2. Discussion on academic freedom in terms of its relation to power and academia. In this light, the focus will be on the Turkish case of academic freedom and explore the increasing pressures on universities across the world with the rise of authoritarian regimes.
