The EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) is happy to announce its 2019 Annual Meeting, entitled “The societal dimension of doctoral education”.
The meeting will focus on the different ways doctoral education and doctoral candidates relate and contribute to society. This includes topics such as the relations between doctoral education and the Sustainable Development Goals, inter-sectoral mobility and collaboration, citizen science and the link between science communication and doctoral education. The EUA-CDE Annual Meeting will also offer reflections on policies and practices that assist the contribution of doctoral candidates to society and on doctoral education structures in general. Open to everyone interested in this field, the EUA Council for Doctoral Education (EUA-CDE) invites university members and other stakeholders to take this opportunity to exchange good practices and build new relations with European policy makers, funding organisations and global partners. This event may be of particular interest for academic leaders, doctoral education professionals, doctoral candidates and other research stakeholders.

I am honoured and delighted to invite you to the University of Brescia to participate in the 2019 Annual Meeting of the Council for Doctoral Education of the European University Association.
The University of Brescia is a public research and teaching institution, located in a medium-sized city that is a champion of technological innovation in Italy. We are a driving force in a wealthy and economically well-developed region, ranking third among the most important provinces in the manufacturing sector in Europe and fifth among the most productive Italian provinces in terms of GDP.
The University of Brescia aims at attaining strong international achievements and a position of leadership in the East Lombardy area by offering education, training and research in the macro-areas of Economics, Engineering, Law and Medicine. Our community is made up of 15.000 students, 550 faculty members and 500 academic, administrative and technical staff. The eight departments of the university’s four areas offer 24 undergraduate and 21 master programmes, 38 schools of specialisation in medical disciplines and 9 PhD programmes. We foster sustainable growth, both in numbers and quality. Our strategic plan strongly emphasises the integration of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals of the UN Agenda within all of our educational and research activities.
During this year’s EUA-CDE Annual Meeting, on “The societal dimension of doctoral education”, we will discuss the different ways doctoral education contributes to the well-being of society, the construction of public awareness and the growth of knowledge. I am pleased to welcome you to our community, as I am sure it will be a unique occasion to strengthen the bond between our institutions and with the local society. Our young and motivated staff is already doing its best to prepare a warm welcome, worthy of such distinguished guests.

About the host
The University of Brescia (Unibs) was officially founded in 1982, building on previous courses provided by the nearby University of Milan, Milan Polytechnic and University of Parma. Culturally lively thanks to numerous important institutions, it also boasts significant artistic heritage starting from the remains of the ancient Roman Brixia to many 18th century churches. The city offers a wide range of sightseeing options, such as Franciacorta, Lake Garda, the valleys Val Camonica and Val Trompia. From an economic point of view, it is one of the most important iron and steel centres in the Po Valley.
Brescia’s historical centre, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, has Roman and Langobard origins, which left an important historical legacy, and offers museums, monuments and buildings of great artistic and architectural interest. Brescia has a population of about 200.000 inhabitants and is served by an excellent bus and subway system, as well as an efficient motorway and railway network.

A welcome reception will be held at the University of Brescia on Wednesday 12 June at 18:45.
The networking reception and dinner will be held in the centre of Brescia on Thursday 13 June at 19:00. The evening will include a welcome drink at the Brescia City Hall, followed by a seated dinner in San Faustino Cloister. Dress code is smart casual. The reception venue, the City Hall, is located in the heart of Brescia, and can be reached by metro (stop Vittoria). The dinner venue is located at a few minutes walking distance from the reception venue.
On Friday 14 June participants can join a free walking tour of Brescia. The tour departs after the end of the final session around 16:00 and lasts app. 1.5 to 2 hours.

The event organisers aim to ensure that all members who desire to attend the Annual Meeting can participate. However, in order to guarantee a balance between country and institution representations, the organisers may have to restrict attendance. Priority will be given to those who register early. Additional registrations will not be accepted once the event is full, even if this occurs before the registration deadline.
The registration deadline is 28 May 2019.
Information on the pre-meeting events on Wednesday 12 June
From 11:30-16:30 the University of Brescia is organising a separate event for Italian university representatives. This event will be conducted only in Italian. Further information will be posted here as soon as available, together with a link to the registration form for this separate event.
From 15:00-16:30 EUA-CDE is organising two pre-meeting workshops in parallel. For more information about the contents of these workshops, please consult the programme. You will be able to indicate your attendance to either of these workshops in the Annual Meeting registration form which is accessible via the Register button on this page. There is no extra fee involved, but kindly note that attendance to these workshops is limited.
From 17:00-18:45 a special event on Promoting doctoral education in South Africa will be organised. For more information about the contents of this event, please consult the programme. You will be able to indicate your attendance to this special event in the Annual Meeting registration form which is accessible via the Register button on this page. There is no extra fee involved.

The registration fee (CDE members, non-CDE members and Doctoral candidates) includes all documentation, coffee breaks and lunches at the meeting, the welcome reception on Wednesday 12 June and the networking reception/dinner on Thursday 13 June. The name badge issued to you upon registration is required for admission to the meeting and all related events. You are kindly requested to wear your name badge at all times.
The companion fee is only valid for a spouse/partner and only gives access to the welcome reception on Wednesday 12 June and the networking reception/dinner on Thursday 13 June. Name badges are required for admission to the social events and will be available for collection at the registration desk.
Participant and companion fees do not cover travel and accommodation expenses or post-conference programmes.
Please note that by filling in the registration form for an event you agree to full payment of registration fees. Your registration will be confirmed by email. Please wait for your confirmation before making any further arrangements.
Payment must be made upon confirmation and prior to the event either by bank transfer or credit card. Credit card payments can only be accepted if paying by Visa or MasterCard. The participant assumes full responsibility for paying all bank charges associated with the payment.
Cancellation of registrations
Cancellations must be sent to EUA by email: email@example.com. If a cancellation is received on or before 20 May 2019, an administration charge of 20% of the registration fee remains due. If a cancellation is received after 20 May 2019 and/or the participant fails to attend, the entire registration fee must be paid. Substitutes will be accepted at any time, provided that EUA is informed of the change.
Neither EUA nor University of Brescia will be liable for any losses, accidents or damage to persons or objects, regardless of the cause. Participants and companions attend the meeting and all related events at their own risk and responsibility.

EUA-CDE has opened a call for contributions to the 2019 EUA-CDE Annual Meeting. Contributions should be related to the societal dimension of doctoral education, see more information.
Block reservations for participants and accompanying guests have been made at special rates in hotels of different categories for the period of the event.
Hotels are to be booked by the participant directly on a first-come, first-served basis. Please note that rates are only valid for reservations directly made via the respective email addresses below. The indicated rates include breakfast. When making your reservation via email, please mention 2019 EUA-CDE Annual Meeting to receive the conference rates.
