EUA webinar series: Greening in European higher education institutions

Friday 4 June 2021, 14.00 to 15.00 CEST

Higher education institutions are important actors in the transition towards carbon neutrality and sustainable societies, and many have taken concrete steps to address environmental sustainability at the strategic level. But drivers and approaches can be quite different across higher education institutions and systems.

The third webinar in the EUA series “Greening in European higher education institutions” showcaseed key findings from EUA’s survey on greening, as well as two institutional case studies. The event focused on links to institutional strategy and national policy, the governance and implementation of activities, as well as the expected impact. The webinar also included a discussion on student engagement and bottom-up approaches for environmental sustainability at higher education institutions.

Speakers and presentations:

  • Mariane Domeizel, Sustainable Development Vice-President, Aix-Marseille University, France
  • Thomas Parrott, Head of Energy & Sustainability, University of Surrey, United Kingdom
  • Meg Baker, Director of Education, SOS students for sustainability network
  • Henriette Stoeber, Policy Analyst, EUA

Chaired by:

  • Alison Morrisroe, Project Officer, EUA

A recording of the webinar is available on our EUA Youtube Channel.

The EUA series on “Greening in European higher education institutions” also included webinars on “Environmental sustainability and the future of mobility and internationalisation” (31 May 2021, 14.00-15.00 CEST) and on “The environmental sustainability of learning and teaching” (3 June 2021, 14.00-15.00 CEST).

Higher education institutions are important actors in the transition towards carbon neutrality and sustainable societies and economies. They are well placed to play a key role in achieving the objectives of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the 2030 Agenda, as well as the European Green Deal. A forthcoming Council recommendation on education for environmental sustainability will set the basis for future actions at the European level to boost policy cooperation and exchange in this field.

To make the sector’s contribution more visible and accessible, EUA has launched an initiative on greening in higher education institutions. In the spring of 2021, institutions from across the EHEA contributed to a large scale survey, sharing their approaches and activities in the field of greening, and showcasing the commitment of the sector to environmental sustainability.

This EUA webinar series showcases the preliminary findings of the survey. The topic of environmental sustainability is also featured in a range of other EUA activities in parallel to the EU’s Green Week, from 31 May to 4 June 2021.

Access to the webinar series is free of charge and open to anyone interested. Registrations will remain open until the start of each event.

Please note that in the context of this work, greening is defined as increasing awareness and taking concrete action towards a green, environmentally-friendly and resource efficient university. This may include the missions and campus, and may involve the members, or the community outside of the institution. It may or may not be part of a broader approach to address the SDGs.
