Growing calls to demonstrate accountability and added value in higher education have driven efforts to evaluate its quality. There have been attempts to do so using indicators aimed at measuring the quality and effectiveness of learning, teaching, and the broader educational experience. But has this resulted in indicators that are indeed able to capture quality in education, for example in external quality assurance, international university rankings, or performance-based funding schemes?

At the focus group, participants will receive highlights from a forthcoming EUA report on approaches to measuring quality in learning and teaching, and on education in the broader sense, in fields such as external quality assurance, international university rankings and performance-based funding. Participants will also have the opportunity to share their own experiences and approaches to the use of indicators of quality in education with the focus group facilitators and other participating universities, as the programme will build on small interactive groups intended to create an open exchange. To facilitate this, participants will receive key questions in advance and should be prepared to contribute actively to the discussions.

The working language of the focus group will be English.

Selected participants are in charge of organising and financing their own travel and accommodation. Applicants are advised to wait with their bookings until they have received confirmation that their application for participation in the focus group has been accepted. A confirmation email informing about the result of the application can be expected within a week after submission.

Participation in this focus group is exclusive to participants from EUA member institutions selected through a call for participation. The absolute deadline to register is 13 March 2020. However, applications will be evaluated on a rolling basis and the maximum capacity of 20 participants might be reached earlier, in which case the application system will be closed before the deadline. We therefore highly recommend applying as soon as possible.
