Institutional approaches to research ethics and integrity: let's talk about new technologies

What impact do technological developments have on research integrity? How do ethical challenges in research affect university governance? In a context of accelerating technological and social changes, the timeliness of developing implementable, effective and sustainable research ethics and integrity (RE&I) policies is patent for university leaders. Therefore, the European University Association is hosting an online leadership roundtable on 31 May 2023 from 15:00-17:30, to:
- Identify the RE&I challenges faced by universities and their leaders −including those related to new technologies, find sustainable solutions and foster peer-learning about issues in the field.
- Explore the role of research ethics committees (RECs) from the perspective of university governance.
- Discuss learning and training opportunities to develop and implement good practices at universities.
This event is open to university leaders from EUA member universities (rectors, vice-rectors, presidents, vice-presidents) who are willing to actively contribute to the exchange. To allow for interactive discussions, this event is limited to a maximum of 40 participants(maximum one representative per organisation). Selection will be made on a first come first served basis.

16.10-16.20: The iRECS project and introduction to breakout sessions, Dirk Lanzerath, Director of the German Reference Centre for Ethics in the Life Sciences (DRZE), Secretary General of the European Network of Research Ethics Committees, Professor at the University of Bonn, i-RECs Project Coordinator
16:20-17:20: Breakout sessions: Participants will have the opportunity to exchange views and share experiences on current RE&I challenges related to digital technologies and bioethics. Cross-cutting aspects, such as the impact of public-private partnerships, distrust in science and the eroding authority of expertise on RE&I governance, will also be addressed. Then, they will explore how RE&I can be integrated into the governance of universities and tackled from a training perspective. Lastly, they will assess their experience with research ethics committees (RECs) and discuss the optimal level of specialisation for RECs.
