    Investment in research and education not only brings the highest European added value, it is also the most effective long-term, future-oriented commitment that the EU can make towards its citizens, writes Rolf Tarrach, President of the European University Association.


    In order to meet political ambitions and societal needs, the European Union needs a good working budget and will have to revisit its investment priorities for the future so as to be able to address the challenges Europe is facing and ensure sustainable development. Cooperation in research and education is a key facilitator to achieve these goals and should therefore be a top investment priority of the Union for the future.


    Brexit negotiations between the EU and the UK are moving into the second phase. The talks during the coming months will focus on finalising the withdrawal agreement including a transitional regime, and establishing a framework for the future relationship.


    Following the success of the activities under the Learning & Teaching Initiative in 2017, EUA continues its work to support members by providing opportunities for peer-learning and the exchange of good practice.


    At its meeting on 28 February 2018, the EUA Research Policy Working Group (RPWG), chaired by EUA Vice-President Professor Martine Rahier, the Deputy President and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of Manchester and member of the Commissioner’s High-Level Expert Group “Research, Innovation, and Science Policy Experts” (RISE), Professor Luke Georghiou,  was invited to discuss major elements of the next EU Framework Programme for Research & Innovation (FP9), such as mission-driven R&I, multidisciplinarity and the integration of the Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), the role of a future European Innovation Council (EIC), and recent trends in doctoral education across Europe.


    For its fourth edition, the Funding Forum will be hosted by Ramon Llull University in Barcelona on 18-19 October.
